Why is Food Cleaning Necessary?
Food cleaning is one of the safety measures to prevent eating contaminated food. Washing is the most common method of cleaning. But is washing enough? Can it remove all the dirt, chemicals or even bacteria that are present in food? Some people doubts that this is true. Dirt found in food can either be visible or invisible. Some of them are not easily removed from food. Mere rinsing will not guarantee cleaning. For some foods, washing is sufficient.
Some forms of dirt are not water-based. They are not washed away by water easily. Cleaning this kind of dirt is done by using chemicals that will react to it. Detergent is one of these chemicals. Washing away dirt becomes easier by using detergent. Some detergents, however, may contain harmful chemicals that may spoil the food or contaminate it. Cleaning food using detergents is not recommended.
More complicated methods of food cleaning are used for more persistent food dirt. But some food surface can’t handle too much pressure. Fruits have natural wax covering that limits contamination to its surface. This wax is sometimes removed by too much cleaning. When the natural wax in fruits and vegetables are taken, they become vulnerable to contamination. This may also speed up the oxidation process.
Food cleaning should be done properly. If not it may pose more danger to foods and to the people eating them. Food cleaning is not restricted to cleaning food surface. Some foods have contacts with articles used for food preparation. There are times when bacteria transfers from the food to kitchen utensils. This creates a need to clean kitchen utensils, too, to protect further spreading of bacteria. Salmonella bacteria may transfer from one food to another food through kitchen utensils. Cleaning kitchen utensils regularly will reduce the spreading of bacteria and eventual food poisoning.
Another form of food cleaning is heating. Most bacteria cannot endure high temperature. Steaming and boiling may kill bacteria in food. But not all food can endure heating, too. This method of cleaning can only be used for foods that can undergo heating without losing their quality. This method is sometimes used simultaneously with food preparation. Sometimes it is the last step in food preparation done before or after packing.
Food cleaning is necessary to prevent or treat food contamination. It will also prevent food spoilage. Dirty food is a threat to healthy living. Dirt, bacteria, and other contaminations are harmful to people. They may lead to serious illness or even death. Food poisoning is one of the results of eating contaminated food. We can prevent food poisoning by cleaning food and the articles used for preparing food. It may not sound very threatening but it is already proven that something bad happens when foods are not properly cleaned.
We can choose to ignore the warnings in this article. You can either do it or wait for something to happen that might just be too late. When it comes to food we have to be strict. Cleaning food when done properly will not do anyone harm. In fact, it can even save your life.
